Language Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a multicultural country, and the primary languages spoken are: Sinhala & Tamil. Sinhala is the official and the most widely spoken language. Besides, both Sinhala & Tamil has its own unique script. Additionally, Tamil is also an official and national language, spoken by the Tamil minority. Tamil is predominantly spoken in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, as well as by Tamil communities across the island. Moreover, English is used as a link language, especially in government, business, education and tourism. While it is not the mother tongue for most, it is widely understood and spoken, especially in urban areas.

Currency

The currency used in the country is the Sri Lankan Rupee, abbreviated as LKR (English), රු (Sinhala) & ரூ (Tamil). It is the official currency of the country. As of recent years, electronic payments, ATMs, and mobile money services have become more common in major cities, but cash is still widely used, particularly in rural areas.

Kitchen

Sri Lankan cuisine is known for its bold flavours, heavy use of spices, and diverse range of dishes influenced by its rich cultural heritage. The island’s cuisine incorporates elements of Indian, Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences, creating a distinct style. Some core elements include rice, coconut, and an array of spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cardamom. Some of their delicious dishes are: Hoppers, a bowl-shaped thin pancake made from rice flour. It can be served plain or with an egg (egg hoppers) in the centre. My fave is Kottu Roti, made by stir-frying shredded flatbread (roti) with vegetables, eggs, and a choice of meat, all spiced with chilli and curry seasoning. Finally, Dhal Curry, this is a staple lentil curry that is simple yet rich in flavour, made from red lentils, coconut milk, and spices.

Best travel time in Sri Lanka

The optimal time for travelling to Sri Lanka relies heavily on the particular regions you intend to explore. In general, Sri Lanka is good to visit all year round, if you take into account the monsoon for each area. The country has two monsoon seasons, Maha & Yala. During these seasons it is adviseble to travel to the dry parts. Maha is from December to April, and for that reason it is best to travel along the southwest. Yala is from April to September, and for that reason it is best to travel along the northeast.
