Pidurangala Rock hike guide
Pidurangala Rock hike guide – The most spectacular view in Sri Lanka!
Sri Lanka is home to countless stunning sights, but Pidurangala Rock is truly one of the highlights. Once you make that final climb and reach the summit, you will be greeted by the majestic sight of Lion Rock (also known as Sigiriya Rock) towering beautifully above the clouds. Pidurangala Rock offers a more adventurous alternative (to the Lion Rock) and is a fantastic option for those looking to spend less. Be sure to check it out and soak up all my tips for climbing the Pidurangala Rock in my hike guide.

Stay in Dambulla or Sigiriya
Both Dambulla and Sigiriya are located in Sri Lanka’s interior, making them great bases to explore the Pidurangala and Lion Rocks. For most visitors, Sigiriya village is the go-to place to stay when visiting either of the rocks. It is a bit more touristy, located right around the corner from both Pidurangala and Lion Rock, and surrounded by lush nature. On the other hand, Dambulla offers a wider range of accommodation options across all price ranges, and it is easier to reach by bus. If you are planning to continue your travels, Dambulla is also a convenient stopover for destinations like Kandy or Anuradhapura. For most travel within Sri Lanka, it is best to take the local bus. Check with your accommodation which line is best to take.

How to reach Pidurangala Rock
Renting a scooter or TukTuk
One option is to rent your own scooter, or if you are travelling around Sri Lanka in a TukTuk, you can make your own way to Pidurangala Rock. We travelled from Dambulla, which takes about 30 minutes by scooter, while it is only around 10 minutes from Sigiriya. Both Dambulla and Sigiriya have scootered rental shops, or you can ask your accommodation if they have one to rent, as they often do.
Private TukTuk driver
You can flag down a TukTuk on the street or arrange one in advance through your accommodation. Be sure to agree on a price beforehand, and your driver will take you there and back. They will wait for you while you climb Pidurangala Rock. Keep in mind, the driver is not a guide and will not assist you on the hike.
Tour
For an enhanced experience, you can add an extra touch to your wonderful experience by setting off with a guide, for example with this tour. Your guide will assist you during the entire hike and can take some incredible photos for you at the top.
Another option is doing a tour with picknick during sunrise or sunset. The tour is a bit pricier, but in its favour comes the fact that an expert & naturalist will accompany you on the hike to the top. This way, you will learn an incredible amount about nature in this area.

Pidurangala Rock sunrise
One of the best ways to view Lion Rock is to catch the sunrise from the summit of Pidurangala. The warm colours create a stunning glow over Lion Rock, making for a magical moment. Sometimes, it is misty, and as the sun rises, Lion Rock slowly appears through the clouds, giving off a mysterious vibe. To catch the sunrise, you will need to set off early. It takes about 30 minutes to climb, so make sure you leave in plenty of time.

Climbing Pidurangala Rock – The ultimate hike guide
All information you need to know
The climb up Pidurangala Rock is a bit of a challenge. It can be especially tricky if you start early in the morning when it is still dark. Although there are small lights along the way, a headlamp might come in handy. The rocks can also be slippery if it has been raining. Just before the entrance, there is a ticket counter where you can purchase your tickets for about €3 per person, which is much cheaper than Lion Rock (around €30 per person). Your first stop is a white temple, from where you turn right to continue the climb. Along the way, you will pass a reclining Buddha and some beautiful paintings.

The final stretch to the summit
In the final stage, you will need to scramble over a few rocks and try to climb under a rock to the top, this does not seem easy, but turns out to be the easiest part. Once you arrive, you will be rewarded with an extraordinary view of Lion Rock. Feel free to walk around the top of the rock and take in the panoramic views of Sri Lanka’s stunning landscape.

Pidurangala Rock viewpoint: Enjoy the scenery!
Once you have reached the top, it is time to take in the scenery completely. The tranquillity and the views are absolutely incredible. Snap a few photos and, if you have one, fly your drone! But be careful, there are a lot of swallows flying around that might attack your drone. Always check whether drone flying is allowed, as restrictions can change depending on the circumstances.
