Trincomalee weather - Online travel guide
When it comes to the best time to visit, most sources recommend travelling to the northeast from April to September, which is also the busiest period. Before or after this time, you may find that many places are closed, and heavy storms are more likely due to the Maha monsoon season. We travelled at the start of the season and noticed that the area was pleasantly quieter than usual, but on the downside we had some rainy days, because of the weather transition.
Monkeys & cows in abundance
As you wander through the streets of Trincomalee, do not be startled if a cow or a monkey casually crosses your path, it is all part of the charm! Suddenly, we were delighted to encounter a Gray Langur monkey cradling her baby, a heart-warming sight that left us in awe. Moreover, cows hold a special place in Sri Lankan culture, religion, and daily life. Revered as sacred in Hinduism, especially in the Tamil Hindu communities of Trincomalee, these gentle creatures roam freely with a serene confidence.

History of the Tamil-speaking part of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, gained independence from British rule on February 4, 1948. Initially under Portuguese control in the 16th century, it later fell to the Dutch and then the British in 1796. By 1972, it became a republic and adopted the name Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, in 1983, civil war erupted between the government and the LTTE, seeking a separate Tamil state in the north and east. In 2009, the conflict ended when the Sri Lankan army defeated the LTTE. Today, the Tamil region is safe to visit and surprisingly untouristed!

Things to do in Trincomalee - Online travel guide
Shri Badrakali Amman Hindu kovil temple
Without a doubt, one of the most impressive temples in Trincomalee is the Shri Badrakali Amman Hindu Kovil. From the moment you arrive, this Hindu temple will captivate you with its vibrant colours and intricate details, a true feast for the eyes! Once inside, you will find yourself immersed in the spiritual atmosphere, surrounded by worshippers admiring the stunning decorations. Best of all, there is no entrance fee. However, remember to dress modestly, covering your knees and shoulders is a must to show respect.

Discover the Thirukkoneswaram Kovil Temple
Begin your visit to Fort Frederik with a special experience: the Thirukkoneswaram Kovil Temple. This stunning temple, located at the very end of the fort, offers a picturesque sight as you approach. As soon as you enter the fort, you will be greeted by deer freely roaming the grounds. These sacred animals have been residents here for centuries, adding to the charm of this historic site.
Fort Frederik
While many online sources recommend visiting Fort Frederik, we found the fort itself less remarkable. Fortunately, you can walk through the fort for free on your way to the temple, enjoying breathtaking views along the route. If you would like to explore the fort in more detail, there is an additional fee of €3 or €6, depending on the areas you wish to access. However, keep in mind that a large part of the fort remains off-limits.

Best beaches in Trincomalee - Online travel guide
The beaches around Trincomalee are a true delight, far quieter than those in the south of Sri Lanka. Soft sandy beaches and palm trees create the perfect setting for a relaxing day.
Dutch Bay Beach
As you enter Trincomalee, you will find Dutch Bay Beach near Fort Frederik. Situated by the harbour, this beach is popular among locals for swimming. Unlike other areas in Trincomalee, it is spotless and well-maintained.
Paddle Boarding
Should you like it, you can rent a paddle board and go out to sea. This is also a great activity for beginners who would like to learn paddleboarding. In fact, an instructor will accompany you and teach you all the ins and outs.

Uppuveli
The most well-known beach in Trincomalee, Uppuveli boasts several beach bars and restaurants. If you are keen on diving, this is the place to be, with plenty of options available.
Fernando’s bar
One of the best beach bars in Uppuveli, Fernando’s is ideal for enjoying a refreshing drink. While the food here is pricier than elsewhere in Trinco, the freshly grilled catch of the day was large enough to share and incredibly delicious. As night falls, the bar transforms into a lively spot with a DJ, perfect for an enjoyable evening.

Nilaveli
For those craving a peaceful escape, Nilaveli is the perfect choice. A 30 minute TukTuk or scooter ride from Trincomalee, this expansive beach offers tranquillity with only a handful of bars along its shores.
Snorkelling at Pigeon Island
Just off the coast lies Pigeon Island, one of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems. Boats to the island depart from Nilaveli or Uppuveli, taking you to vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, and even reef sharks. You can book tours directly on the beach, but be prepared to negotiate, as prices often start high. For a hassle-free experience, consider booking online in advance to secure a fair rate. I did not go at the time, as I arrived fresh from the Maldives, so somewhat overloaded with all the beauty the underwater world had to offer there. I have heard from other travellers that this island is worth a visit, though.

Travel to other destinations - Trincomalee online travel guide
For most travel within Sri Lanka, it is best to take the local bus. Check with your accommodation which line is best to take. If you want to travel a bit more luxuriously, in some cases you can opt for an air-conditioned minivan, in which case you share the van with a small group of people.
Colombo
For long distances, like the trip from Trincomalee to Colombo, you can book transport in advance. You can easily book your bus or train ticket online. Make sure to book 1 or 2 days in advance to ensure a seat.
