Step into a frosty world full of magic, as each year, the Ice Sculpture Festival in Zwolle presents a new exhibition. For the purpose of creating breathtaking sculptures, around 40 professional ice artists contribute to this project, hailing from all corners of the globe. Using special effects such as lighting and sounds, the images are magically displayed. The theme for 2023 to 2024 is ‘Myths & Legends’. In this article you will see the pictures of the years 2022 to 2023, the theme then was ‘What a Wonderful World’.

The making off
Creating the ice sculptures requires a substantial amount of ice, counting on 1,500 kilograms per sculpture. Due to the significant amount of water needed, rainwater is utilized, purified by removing minerals. Additionally, a lot of snow is used for certain snow sculptures, snow machines are used for this, the snow is also used as a kind of cement between ice and snow sculptures. The ice artists get to work with chain sawing until they can switch to finer tools. Afterwards, all the water is returned to nature.
