You have probably heard of them, botanical gardens are a must-visit for any flora lover. The Netherlands has plenty, from Amsterdam, to Leiden to Delft and, of course, Utrecht. Best time to visit Utrecht Botanic Gardens
Spring and summer are the perfect seasons to visit. Then all the flowers are in bloom and the plants start to grow pale green leaves, a fantastic phenomenon to take in completely.
Bamboo forest
Firstly, on entering the Botanic Gardens, it is possible to follow a route. Hence, we started the route through the bamboo forest and here you come across a lot of different and fascinating bamboo species.

Furthermore, you will see tropical palm trees with their magnificent leaves. Markedly, you shall notice all kinds of roots sticking out above the ground, which gives a cool sight. These roots are often called aerial roots and often grow in tropical mangrove forests.

Utrecht University Botanic Gardens
The Utrecht Botanic Gardens belong to Utrecht University because they were originally established for scientific research and education. The gardens have long been a resource for students and researchers studying botany, ecology, and environmental sciences. They also have a unique feature, namely the rock garden. This unique rock has been laid out on top of ‘Fort Hoofddijk’ since 1963 and is equipped with all kinds of rock plants that can withstand different weather conditions.

Fort Hoofddijk - Utrecht Garden history
In the Netherlands, we have the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline). This is an intricate system of forts, locks, dykes, canals and concrete works deployed between 1870 and 1945. It was an important line of defence in Dutch history. As aircraft came along over time, the water line became obsolete. The line still exists nowadays and is a 220 kilometres long waterline through four different provinces in the Netherlands, from Muiden to de Biesbosch.
Largest Rock garden in Europe
Surprisingly, it is the largest Rock Garden in Europe! On one side of the rock, you will see a waterfall with accompanying plants. This is the shadowy side, where many special flowers bloom. Not only can the rock be seen, but also it is possible to climb it, and it offers a nice view of the gardens. For those who do not want or cannot climb the rock, there is also a possibility to walk along the rock, this route leads you around the rock and gives a nice vision of different and unusual plant species.

Utrecht garden photography - Butterflies
Afterwards, having lunch in the organic restaurant, we walked towards the butterfly garden. Because not too many people are allowed to get in simultaneously, we had to wait a while before we could go in. Trust me, it is worth the wait. Surprisingly, it is very impressive to see all the butterflies flying around as they fly pretty close and often fly together with each other. It strikes us that they are special butterflies from several continents of the world. The colours and shapes of the lovely wings make it a true paradise. This garden is not just about butterflies, the greenhouse is packed with nectar-rich flowers, all carefully chosen to attract and nourish the butterflies.

Utrecht gardens admission
Given these points, I say definitely worth a visit when you are around. Nature lovers will enjoy this lovely place!
