1. Names of Indian cities - Top 10 facts of India

Loads of Indian cities changed their names in the 90s, so do not be surprised if many Indian citizens still refer to them by their old names.

2. Salt extraction through groundwater

In the region of Marakkanam (state of Tamil Nadu), salt is extracted from groundwater here. The locals work hard to collect the salt.

6. How do marriages and having children actually work in India?

Women are allowed to marry from the age of 22, men from the age of 24. Both husband and wife are supposed to work, they want to maintain equal rights in this. The woman’s parents have to pay for the wedding of ± 1000 men. The whole family goes along, as well as the whole village they come from. You must be wondering why nothing is paid from the man’s family? This has been the case for years and that is the tradition, the woman’s family pays. Because of this, most families also live in a rented house with parents and the rest of relatives. When a child is expected, the woman moves in with her parents after 7 months, they take care of her for a while and again pay the expenses. The child is given a name given by the parents after 26 days. 

7. India has many languages

In India, they speak 415 different languages, which means they have their own language in almost every district. The official language is Hindi, but most Indians speak a word of English, keep it simple and listen carefully as they are not always easy to understand.

10. Extremely friendly locals and a remarkable 'head wobble'

Many locals look at you with wonder, you look so different, especially if you have blonde or red hair. So they are only too happy to take a photo with you. If you want to take their picture, always ask them first, as they will almost always shake their heads. This is also known as the typical ‘head wobble’, which means a sort of “okay”. Be sure to show the photo afterwards as they really like it!
