Language Maldives

Dhivehi has evolved from the ancient language of Elu, which is an early form of Sinhala. It has been influenced by various languages over the centuries, including Arabic, French, Persian, Portuguese, and English, due to the Maldives’ long history of trade and colonial encounters. It is an alphabetic script with letters representing consonants and vowels, and it includes several characters that have been adapted from Arabic numerals.

Currency

The official currency in the Maldives is Maldivian Rufiyaa, although the Dollar is generally accepted in the Maldives, especially in resorts, hotels, and tourist areas. Prices in such places are often quoted in US dollars. It is common for tourists to use US dollars for transactions, though change might be given in rufiyaa.

Kitchen

The Maldivian cuisine uses its own ingredients the most, such as seafood, coconut, and starchy staples like rice. Chillies, curry leaves, garlic, ginger, and onions are frequently used to flavour dishes. Here are some popular Maldivian dishes:

  • Mas Huni: A traditional breakfast dish made from shredded smoked tuna, grated coconut, onions, and chili, typically eaten with flatbread.
  • Garudhiya: A clear fish soup made with tuna, served with rice, lime, chili, and onions.
  • Fihunu Mas: Grilled fish marinated with chili, garlic, lime juice, and salt.
  • Boshi Mashuni: A salad featuring banana flowers, coconut, lime, turmeric, and chili.
  • Kukulhu Riha: A chicken curry made with coconut milk and spices.
  • Huni Roshi: Flatbread made with grated coconut mixed into the dough.

Best travel time in the Maldives

Essentially, you can jet off to these sunny shores all year round. While there are dry and rainy seasons, the rain rarely pours all day long. So, even during the rainy season, you can still bask in plenty of sunshine during your holiday.
