The most exciting day of the year in the Netherlands is undoubtedly King’s Day! The entire country turns orange, as everyone eagerly anticipates the festivities, hoping for sunshine to enhance the celebrations. Let us delve into this joyous occasion and explore why it has become such a massive event. Check out my King’s Day Amsterdam guide!

King's Day history

Following years of celebrating Queen’s Day on April 30th, King’s Day officially began on April 27th, 2014, when King Willem Alexander ascended the throne on April 30th, 2013. Since then, the Netherlands has commemorated King’s Day on April 27th.

This year (2025), King’s Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26th !

Orange madness through The Netherlands

During King’s Day, almost the entire country dresses in orange, and the Orange madness starts the night before, with King’s Night. In the early morning hours after King’s night, children begin selling their old belongings at flea markets, as space becomes scarce. The streets are brimming with second-hand items, with no room left for traffic.

King's Day Amsterdam nightlife

In case you are planning to celebrate King’s Day in Amsterdam, experiencing King’s Night the evening before is an absolute must. The festivities kick off with many pubs hosting lively parties well into the early morning hours, often accompanied by quintessentially Dutch music. If you are looking for a fun night out, then consider purchasing tickets in advance for events like Fiesta Macumba & Happy Feelings. Otherwise, you could just visit one of the thousand pubs in the city centre, one of the best districts to go is the Jordaan.

In Amsterdam city centre, you will find several spots that are perfect for a party. For instance, at the Jordaan, you will find plenty of people in the Westerstraat in particular. Feast your eyes as you walk or stand dancing along the canals, as the canals also turn orange because of all the boats passing by. Boat owners deck out their vessels to the nines and throw elaborate parties on board. You can also join a bout tour, be sure to book in advance, because they can be full when the date approaches.

Amsterdam flea markets King's Day

Throughout the city, you will find flea markets, including Rembrandtplein, NDSM-werf, and Sarphatipark. However, the majority of flea markets in Amsterdam are located in and around Vondelpark. Only children are allowed to sell their items here, a rule also observed at NDSM-werf. Besides shopping for second-hand goods, you can also enjoy delicious food and drinks.

King's Day festivals/events Amsterdam

Numerous festivals take place throughout the city, but tickets sell out quickly, so you will need to act fast. I have personally attended Oranjebloesem and Kingsland, both offering unique experiences. Typically, these festivals feature multiple stages catering to various musical tastes. Generally you can expect techno at Oranjebloesem and mainstream music at Kingsland. Other fantastic festivals include Loveland van Oranje & Urban Music Legends Festival.

King's Day Amsterdam tips

🧡 Wear Orange! – It is the national colour, and everyone will be rocking it.

🚲 Ditch the Bike – The city is packed, and cycling is nearly impossible. Walking or taking public transport is the way to go.

🍻 Stock Up on Drinks – Supermarkets and liquor stores may close early, and bars will be crowded. Grab your drinks ahead of time!

📍 Pick a Meeting Spot – With packed streets and limited phone signal, it is easy to lose friends. Agree on a central meetup point.

🚾 Know Your Toilets – Public restrooms are scarce. Look for portable toilets, use a café, for which you are bound to pay a small fee.

🎶 Follow the Music – Every square has a different vibe, from DJ sets to live bands. Just wander and find your scene!

Arrive Early – The best markets, spots, and parties fill up fast.

🌦 Check the Weather – April can be unpredictable in the Netherlands, so bring a light rain jacket just in case.
